Hey Guys

Sorry this this is a post somewhere else but I'm just wondering what everyone fills their FX5's with? I'm currently using Substrat Pro by Eheim but I think it's getting clogged with gunk and the bacteria isn't doing as good of a job as it could be. Ideas?

Thanks! :)

Put some filter floss in the first tray and it will keep the gunk out of your bio.

mine has all three trays full of ceramic bio media. a few weeks ago i noticed the filter was gurgling and not working like it should. it was the bio media. it was clogged with gunk.

i poured all the water in the FX5 into a 5g bucket. i then dumped all my media from the baskets into the bucket and swished everything around. it was FILTHY!!!!!!! afterwards, the filter was working great.

even bio media builds up crap in between the spaces eventually. it will need an occasional cleaning

I'm finding that when I open them up for a clean, they're absolutely full of gunk, might try some bigger ceramic media and more filter floss, thanks!

Mines full of Seachem Pond Matrix (about two and a half baskets) with a bit of normal Matrix and some coral chunks to fill it out. Seems to work fine but like stated, it does need some maintenance to keep the gunk out.

Substrat Pro by Eheim and bulk carbon from a LFS. try putting it in a nylon panty hose and see what that does. that did the trick for me.

being that they filter at 925 gph unfilled, i have a feeling biomedia isn't as effective as in canisters in slower rates like ehiems, i still have all ceramic rings in mine but i've been looking to find media i would like better than them for my Fx-5's.

My 404 gets NASTY after a few weeks. I dump the water out in the tub and rinse of all the media with water from the hose I WC with. Putting filter floss in an FX5 would probably just increase the maintenance, since it will clog so fast.
