Hey guys,

I had was confused about the media in my used fx5. The bottom two trays are filled with either ceramic rings or biomax. How can you tell which one is which? Do both do the dame function? Oh and also, the two trays are filled with rock like balls that are tannish brown color. What is it and it's function? Sorry about the lack of knowledge! Thanks in advance!

Biomax looks like a combo without the cheese filling and is coarse like a pumice stone. Fluval also makes a prefilter which looks similar but is smooth and has 5 or 6 sides with definite corners. The prefilter is a form of mechanical filtration to trap large debris and biomax is for bio. The ceramic balls are most likely eheims version of biomax, they are a little bigger than a pea.

Bio max is hollow.

2nd media sounds like matrix?

Those little brown ceramic balls are simular to hydroton , they are most likely the enhiem brand like stated previously
