So I'm getting ready to set up my new FX5 filter. I'd like to get some feed back on what what media I should be putting in the 3 layers. Here's my idea 1st level pre-filter, 2nd carbon/ammonia remover, 3rd level bio-max. With each level having a polishing pads.
My friend is telling me to loose the carbon/ammonia an just use more ceramic.
What do you guys use? What do you thing?

Id say
1st) pre filter
2nd) biomax
3rd) biomax
You don't really need carbon it's just needed to remove medication and the ammonia will be taken care of by regular water changes.

i keep ceramic bio-rings in all of the baskets.. i tried keeping chemi-pure in one basket in each of them but the mesh clogs and i end up having to take it out too often. same with the polishing pads, if you backflush the filter once in awhile the foam pads (in the ring) clean the water just fine.

Duh....already told you. Fill that thing up! Then get a 2nd one and do it again :)

Bio max or cnodes in all three, ditch the polishing pads and get an ac110 for water polishing!

Or even better still, eheim 2252 internal : 1200 L/ hour , which for an internal is astounding
This thing is better than alot of smaller canisters around. To go that extra mile: replace the mech sponges and use polyfilter or carbon.
Your water will be super crystal clear.
This is the ultimate internal . Perfect used in combo with the big canister filters.
