I was doing some thinking (I know I know....what the holy heck) I am wanting to change up a little bit how my media is in this filter. Has anyone replaced their media with this http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4136+4140+8983&pcatid=8983 and maybe modify the trays in the filter a little. What I am thinking of doing, is trimming down the inner wall of one of the trays and filling it with the above media, and replacing the outside sponges with blue sponge pads to cover the top of the bio media. Do you think that this would be a project worth while, or leave things as they be.

My current setup is a 150 gal, stock list consists of 2 oscars 12', GT 8" and a common pleco

Filtration is a FX5 and two magnum 350's

That is great bio media has an excellent surface area from what I have read. $$$ though. Its in my eheim. Couldnt hurt to experiment. However if you have a cycled tank changing your bio media is a bad idea i am not too sure if you mean to add space for the substrate pro or replacing your existing. If you want to replace the existing in a cycled tank id highly reccomend against it. If you do it however do it 25% or less every 3 months or so is my opinion.

if youre ammonia/nitrites are both at 0, and you do not plan on adding a lot more fish, there really is no need for the extra bio media. of course its not gonna hurt anything, but you really dont need to. you could have all the bio media in the world but it wont matter if you dont have the bioload to support it and keep it alive.

as carswell said, if you decide to change it anyway, do one tray at a time, perhaps one each month

Ahhh the right side of my brain was not working with the left side.........

What I am going to do is slowly add this media in with the media that is already in my filter. I will not be taking ANY of the bio media out, I would be adding the bio media in, and replacing maybe one sponge a month in each tray with the blue filter media for mechanical. How does that sound :nilly:

well if youre not taking any out, then you can do it all at once. what bio media do you have in there right now? if its adequate, you can even change all the sponges at once w/o having to worry about your bacteria
