Depends how much money you want to spend and how much biological vs. mechanical you're trying to do.

For biological the top of the line is Eheim Substrat or Seachem Matrix. Or ceramic rings are a little cheaper.

For mechanical, sponges and filter pads.

Don't use polishing pads unless you like cleaning your filter daily from plugging up.

so am i ok to fill all baskets with ceramic media? or what should i put in each?

i got the filter used and it has charcoal (i think) in 1 basket and ceramic rings in another then filter wool.

its a hell of a long time since ive used an external, (fluval 404) an i can't remember what media i used.
