In a 10g tank w/wife n kids
While feeding my knifefish I noticed no water coming out of my FX5. Felt around motor housing for heat and it was cold so that tells me it's been off overnight. My FX5 is just over a year old and this is quite premature for the motor to die. I cleaned out the impeller and checked for any obstructions (bare bottom tank), found none. Plugged it in on the kitchen counter and no sound, no vibration at all. Bummed out:( Good thing I have a 55g sump so I put the bio media from the FX5 in there and place an order for a new motor and they are not cheap. Anyone experience this motor failure?

Warranty for my motor is void due to me accidentally running over the cord (unplugged for filter service) with my vacuum cleaner last year. That is not the cause of motor being dead but either way Hagen will not honor warranty which I fully understand. They are very helpful over the phone and easy to deal with. New motor is on the way, hopefully it'll last but if not it has a 3 year warranty. Unless of course a vac the cord again, lol.

Running over the cord? How does that voids the warranty?

I explained to her that would not cause the motor to die but she said they cannot accept it back. She said if I had sent it w/o telling them they would have boxed it back up and send it right back.

Well the power goes straight to the motor, no fuse before it so if the wires got crossed (pos & neg) it would short out the motor fairly easily, and if the wires are damaged then their not insulated which can cause a fire, could blow the breaker etc. Not to mention the other 1000 possibilities! And its a way for them not to get screwed and lose $.

That reminds me of when I got my first car, I spent 2500 grand on aftermarket parts, and when the tranny failed they voided my warranty, they engineer these things to run the way they are and changing one element could have adverse effects, the shredded wires could have made the motor fail but most likely not.
