Never had these types of filters long ago when I had fish. Mine came empty except the hard foam white parts. What else should I put inside? I have two of them for my tank, should I put different stuff in each one or the same stuff. I need some good advise here, my fish are relying on good advice from experienced fishkeepers.

hes referring to those fine polishing pads. dont use those the clog up fast.

i have 12 scrubbies in the middle and bottom tray and six on the top tray. they seem to have been the best bang for buck.

fluval biomax is good too. i dont know how much you should get.

Your saying to take out the white hard foams they give you?????????????????????????

yes, you will end up cleaning/replacing them every week to two weeks. I suggest a combination of pot scrubbies and ceramic noodles.

Does anyone us the white soft foam in one or more of the baskets for the FX5

The only foam I use in my cans is a coarse on the bottom and a water polisher on the top. I put different mixtures of sintered glass and SeaChem Matrix (my favorite for the price) depending on how much I have of what.

Leave the sponges that surround the trays, and then just fill the trays with bio-max. The sponges should be adequate mechanical filtration for almost all tanks, so you can use the rest of the space for purely bio filtration
