I am putting my new 125 gal in the living room. i want it to be as quiet as possible so i would rather not use any HOB filters. would 1 fx5 be enough? the tank is going to have oscar, JD, Palmas, krib, pleco, and clown knife... my uncle recently got rid of his tank and has a store bought wet/dry that was on his 75 gal, how loud are wet/drys compaired to am fx5 and what would work better??

IMO your fine with an FX5 on a 125g. I have the same set up currently running and it's silent. wet/drys are allot louder but have their advantages as well. I have both on the 220g. There are thing like dureso pipes etc.. that can help cut down on the noise.

Yeah you will be fine on that tank, ive got two,one on the 180g and one on the 100g discus tank.but first thing,do not overtighten the lid and dont fill it too much with FINE media as it will clog up pretty quickly.

I have a Fx5 on my 180g down in the basement spare room and today i went to check on it because i thought it was off its so quiet. i also had a 55g sump wet dry filter on it before which is about 20x as loud you hear a lot of dripping and the sump pump will vibrate on the tank. Which im sure you could fix somehow.

As for the Fx5 clogging on fine media he is 100% correct i spent 6 hours figuring out why it wasnt working properly and after taking it apart and re testing it about 10 times i found that the carbon was slipping through and getting caught in the impellar. I stoped this by putting some rite size bonded filter pad at the very bottom under the media basket and no problems so far. it doesnt restrict the flow either.

very helpful thanks a lot i think i am going to go with the fx5. what is the best setup for the input/output should i set them up as far apart as possible or does the speacing not matter?

I've had wet dry's in the past. Even with durso stand pipes they were loud as I would hear the water entering the wet dry. For this reason alone when I pick up another 125 I'm going with an FX5.

I think you'll be fine with the fx5. We have an fx5 and a penguin 350 on our 90 gal , but then again it's also stuffed with fish. If I could I would love to get rid of the 350 due to noise but it will never happen considering my stock list.
