I was wondering if I could get away with this. I have a 120g African Chiclid tank. I used to have a Fluval 404 and 2 Pen. 350 bio wheels and 2 Pen. 160 bio wheels on it. About six months ago I took off the 404 and put on 2 FX5. Now my question is would it be OK if I take off the HOB bio wheels and only run the 2 FX5's? BTW I have only 12 fish ranging in lenght of 2-5 inches.

OVERKILL!!!,

I know your surprised by my answer... I cant belive that you put two filters rated at 500 gallons onto a 160 with 12 fish, i have one xp3 on a 80 with 13 cichlids (3-6") and the water is perfect.... no spikes.

But if you got it use it, there is no suck thing as too much filtration, just not enough.

the thing is that your tank is far from HUGE (1000gallon) or over stocked (30-40 cichlids would be just about right for a 160)... if you somehow got them for free i will give you $100 USD for your spare fx5 and another $30 shipping... no joke you I'll paypal you right now.

Thanks for the reply. And no I do not want to sell one, sorry. I used to have 50 fish in there but over the years I have lost many and moved some. Just have not put any new ones in there. But your saying that I could get rid of the bio wheels and only run the FX5. Without upsetting the bio's of the tank. I have ran bio wheels on every tank I have ever set up. I have never ran just a canaster only before.

I only run canister and internal for water movement. I have 1 FX5 on my 220 and it does the job with ease.

You should be good to go.

I would put some type of bio media in a media bag and throw it in one of the FX5's if you are only going to be running them.
