Hello,

I am in the process of setting up my 125 gallon ciclid tank. I have a FX5 under the tank in the stand, it is pretty quiet - just a quiet hum - sounds like a cooling fan. It is in my home office and I am finding it a bit loud - sounds like a drone after .5 hour.

Right behind my home office is our laundry room - immediately behind the tank is the laundry tub. I was thinking of installing the FX5 in the laundry room in the laundry tub cabinet. I would need to extend both the intake and output hoses approx 36" inches each. The existing hoses are approx 48" each. I could easily add a Y connector to the drain for easy water changes and draining the fx5 for cleaning....

Would this setup work? Would it put any excess strain on the motor or diminish its overall performance?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

See if the hoses or canister are contacting the stand framing, except for the stand floor obviously. Sometimes all you need to do is move it slightly to change the pitch of the hum. Also, setting the filter on a piece of thick, spongy foam, a towel or carpet scrap will reduce the vibrations.

Heck, you may even want to just check if it's laying against something. I had a plastic bottle tip over and lean against my canister and it was humming until I moved the bottle. Otherwise unplug and replug may help reset the impeller.

Good advice too.

Thanks for the responses.

I have it on foam rubber. It is placed away from the sides of the stand. The hoses are hanging freely (i.e. not stress on the hoses).

The odd thing is if open the doors of the stand put my ear next to the fx5 it is very quiet. However when I close the door and stand back it sounds louder. So wired harmonics going here.

Should I tear it down and check the impeller?

Thanks,
Steve

If the doors are open and the FX5 is quiet then the problem must be echoing in the cabinet. Try wrapping the filter in a large towel or blanket and see if the noise subsides.
