I purchased a FX5 several weeks ago and have not been able to get rid of air bubbles in the filter. I managed to get the air bubbles out once, but had to do 100% water change after that. Since then I cannot get rid of the air bubbles. I have done the following:
-tightened the fasteners on the in/out hoses
-in/out pipes in the tank are push all the way through
-I have tightened the rings on the cannisters as hard as I can
-I have put vaseline around the lid to make it air tight
-I filled the cannister as much as I could with water

What else could be causing the air bubbles? Should I look into buying all new tubing? If there was a tiny hole in the tubing, I would expect water leakage somewhere.

Any help is appreciated :) I am getting ready to throw this filter out my apartment window I am so frustrated with this filter :)

I know when I put too much filter floss in any of the trays I had the same problem, took some out (not to fill past half of tray) problem cleared up. Maybe not your problem, but maybe it is.

Good luck

Does the FX5 have an auto purge? Maybe it's not working properly. Air bubbles seem to be a common problem with this canister. I have read that rearranging and basicly fooling with the media can solve the problem.

Thanks for the responses guys. Very helpful. I have managed to get rid of the bubbles for now. I think its a matter of just fooling around with the filter. Next task is getting rid of the cloudiness! :)

Nice. I keep a small amount (halfway full in basket) of floss in bottom tray. I replace every 2 weeks, keeps tank very clear.

I have a water polisher and fine filter floss in the bottom basket and the water is still cloudy. No clue what is the cause. At first I thought it was ammonia, but the ammonia level is low (busy cycling). I am thinking I did not clean the gravel well enough and it is the gravel. I did a 100% water change the other day and the water was clear, but after 2 days it is clouding again.

If you leave filter padding in there to long that's what creates the bubbles, canisters are high flow, I just run sponges and bio never had bubbles and my water is crisp!
