Hello, sorry for so many questions, trying to learn about canister filters, what is all the excitment about pot scrubbers inside the canisters, doesnt water just go around them and through the filter, cant quite see how they would filter an aquarium????????????????????? Are FX5s fairly quiet?

FX5s are quite. i have one on my 75 gal and one on my 125gal. The one on my 125 is in my stand and with it being behind a wood door it is more quite then the two 350B(HOB) filters i also have on this tank...

I have pot scrubbies in the one thats on my 75gal and i know ppl use them for bio media and to tell the truth im not to fond of them i would rather change it out with some bio-max

hope this helps

Pot scrubbies are excellent replacement upgrade for bioballs, where the beneficial bacteria can be expose to both air and water in wet/dry trickle filters. They are not the best bio media in totally submerged sitsuations such as in canister filters. Best bet would be to pay a little more and get biomax.

What is biomax???????????????

I have an FX5 on my 100g and 12 pot scrubbies per basket. There are no noise or flow issues, and the scrubbies support enough bacteria to keep my ammonia/nitrites at 0 all the time. I dont see the need to spend $80+ on some bio media when scrubbies do the job for a fraction of the cost.

BTW, in my 100g i currently have:

- 1x silver arowana 10"
- 1x Green terror 4"
- 1x Carpintis 4"
- 4x Tinfoil barbs 3"
- 2x Synodontis decorus 3"
- 1x Jack Dempsy 3"
- 1x Synodontis petricola 3"
- 2x Chinese algae eater 4"
- 1x Common pleco 5"
- 1x Indo tiger fish 4"
- 2x Clown loaches 2"
- 1x Senegal bichir 5"

You will when that stock list of yours is full grown and you are using that FX5 to support a 300 plus gallon tank.

Right on, Right on:iagree:

I also have 12 pads per basket, except sometimes I run 8 in the top if Im running SeaChem Carbon or Purigen in a filter bag with it. The scrubbies are an excellent home for bio bacteria, with their fairly large surface area.
And you cant beat the price $1.00 for a pack of 6 at Dollar General.
Also no noise or flow issues, very please with the preformance,
I have a very heavily stocked 125g saltwater fish only predator setup.

Glad too see someone else agrees and julnj2 im not having a dig at you. Its the same as the whole sand Issue, people buy cheap sand and wonder why they get aerobic pockets, spend the extra $$$ and buy aquarium grade sand and you dont get these problems(tried it, been there got the tshirt). $1000 tank, $300 on fish, $250 Filter, 33c on pot scrubbies............ Pot scrubbies are ideal for large sumps with loads of room(heck if I had a sump I'd use them tightly packed myself).

I guess i'll have to agree to disagree with others on this subject.
