so i made a decision last week to change my substrate as i was getting bored with the black blasting sand. the new substrate i added a few days ago was a very fine powdery white sand. after 3 days i realized the sand was too fine and when the fish would dart by the sand would instantly cloud the tank plus the white color washed out the fish colors not a wise choice at all. so today another substrate change, i went with a half grain natural colored sand(perfect). i removed all the powdery sand and decided while in the mood to do maintenance on 2of my 4 filters. i have 2 fx5 filters and 2 ac 110's. i do filter maintenance every 2 months on i ac 110 and 1 fx5 and 2 months later on the other 2 filters. when i put the fx5 back together it was amazingly loud. figuring that sand got into the impeller housing i removed filter again:irked: removed impeller and cleaned sand and grime from there, put everything back together and same thing. not as loud but definitely louder than it should be and its not pumping any water now. did i miss a step any anything else i should be looking for? removed/cleaned 3 times and same issue.

I'd check that the impeller is fully seated. Half of the time I remove mine I have to take it apart because of this.

Do you have an aircompressor? If you blow compressed air into the motor housing it should get rid of ALL sand particles! If that doesnt work buy another impeller cuz the sand may have wore part of the plastic off the magnet or impeller thus off balancing it.
