Ive had my fx5 for about 8 months now it has been working great! its full of biomax and that's it.

I cleaned it out for the first time in 3 or 4 months the other day, and to my surprise it really wasn't THAT dirty, granted, this is on a 75 gallon with one 13" fish and that's it.

I put it all back together and now the pump is making a buzzing sound like somethings caught in it.

I took it completely apart to see if there was something stuck and i found nothing, put it back together, still makes the noise. I took the pump off and took the impeller and everything out, i needed a star tool (with a hole in the middle) to take it apart any further :(

Its pretty loud and abnoxious, definitely coming from the pump, i can get a video if needed.

I have 3m color quarts T grade as substrate and i find some in the filter sometimes but it has never hurt it.

I dont want to buy a 168 dollar replacement pump for it i might as well buy another one for 200! which i dont wanna do.

Has anybody else had this problem?

any advice?

Mine has done this a couple times and yeah it pisses me off. A quick and easy fix is to bang your fist on the top of the pump part. Works for me every time.

Happend to me too what I did was bought a new Impeller only to discover that It was only the small round black thing at the tip of the Impeller that I have to re attached to it cause sometimes when u remove the impeller this small thing is accidentally left inside the impeller well... but now I sold my FX 5 already.

Could be air stuck inside. I get this with my 405's after a clean till the air clears

Don't coat the impeller in wads of Petroleum Jelly.

My Tetratec 2400 does the same, they sent me a new motorhead and this one does it too. :wall:

yes its been cleaned obviously, why else would i take it apart?

Its not the air its definitely in the pump

and yeah the punch method worked for me too a while back but not now :( lol

It's not air purging, it's a high pitch buzzing sound coming from the pump I know exactly what your talking about. When I cleaned out my pump assembly, i plugged it in real quick next to the sink to see if it would do it and it stopped. Just make sure ALL the gravel has been cleaned out of the filter itself too so nothing else gets sucked back in..
