Planning on the fx5 for my 150g. I want to take the 1inch hose and split it so i can run 2 returns to the tank. Reason: I want to put inline heaters and Id like to put 1 on each hose. Id also put a uv filter on one line. I can also have a output at each end of the tank.

Questions: uv filter before or after the heater?
From the 1 inch hose, what size should the 2 new hoses be?

Thanks Chris

2 3/4" ID hoses.

You can do some quick math.... When you split the flow, you want to use two hoses that have roughly the same area as one large hose.

1" hose has an area of .785"
1 / 2 = .5 * .5 * 3.14 = .785"

1x 3/4" hose as an area of .442"

2x 3/4" hoses equal around .884"

Thanks, that a nice little site on the fx5. Does the uv go before the heater or after? Thanks again

I dont think it would matter which one is first. Remember though you are gonna need a ton of wattage on your UV (If you want it to kill parasites) even if you cut the flow rate of the FX5 in half .

Im going to put it last inline. I follow you about the flow and have been searching for units that operate from 700-1000 gph so I dont have to slow down the fx5. Ive found a couple that Im considering. Even if its going thru at a quick rate hopefully it will help some. We shall see!

Thanks for the responses

The Fx5 has a 600 GPH flow rate. If you split the flow in half you should be around 300 GPH each. Infact, you may be slightly less than that considering the little restriction there will be from the connection points of the UV.

My guess is 250-300 GPH you will have through the UV.

If you want a higher flow ratted UV you can look at pond UV but make sure its the correct type for killing parasites and not just algae

what type of connection will you use to split the two outlets?
I would use a true PVC Wye. You can get it from here if not at your local store.

They sell a 1" true wye but its 1" on all slip sockets so you will need 2 3/4" slip socket barb fittings.

You will also need to convert to vinyl tubing to do all this. There are a couple threads on here to search for and there is also my page below which is a little vague but it may give you the idea.

:headbang2 +1 I was in a hurry last night. A turbo twist 18 would help and a 36 watt should do the job quite well. There are many different good companies I prefer the turbo twist but some dont. My advice is do some research on the units your interested in and read some reviews. Best of luck :)
