Ok im new here. This question is about my FX5 From what I know they go bottom to top through the outer sponges then top to bottom through the middle of the trays ? Am I correct ? I have it set up with the sponge that comes with it on outside *obviously* then the fluval micro sponge filtering ontop, bio balls in middle and carbon bags in bottom. This should be fine with my African cichlids right ?

On a side note my monsters are in a 125 fresh and a 125 salt. I JUST put this african tank together. Well just finished stocking it and purchased a bigger filter. Never used an Fx5 but so far *other then this confusion of how the water flows through it* I like it. VEERY QUIET

Yes water siphons into the bottom up thru the sponges and dumps into the middle down the baskets and up thru the outakes.

I have mine setup w/ no polishing pad and all 3 trays are stacked with ONLY biomax! Carbon is somewhat useless as everyday media, u dont need it unless ur removing meds or color. Imo stack urs with all bio then when u need to setup a new tank u have plenty of spare bio media! Your fw fish will love it and the waste will be coverted to nitrates quicker!

Oh and i use an ac110 to polish my water ontop of my fx5
