Morning all,

Bit narked this morning as my 4 month old FX5 has died. It's only been a couple of hours and the shop opens in 4.5hours so I'll be getting it replaced.

I've tried unplugging and replugging. I'm just waiting for my OH to wake up for stripping it down and making lots of noise trying to fix it and swearing.

I have an air pump and powerhead so hopefully that will keep it ticking over. Is there anything else I can do? I've got a 100 gallon tank so no other pump in my house is worth putting on. Just want to make sure I don't lose any stock as I've become quite attached to my little jaffa pack and flagtail.

Thanks
Leigh

No, no burning smell and it's cold. I gave the canister a full clean out only 2 weeks ago and it was bogged down with sand which i took out. Could it be a case of complete disassembly?

well the FX5 runs it's motor at the bottom and if sand gets inbetween the impeller and motor it will tear up the magnet which would cause it to go bad.

Have you disassembled the motor and pulled the impeller? I'd be curious to see pictures of the magnet on the impeller if you have or will be doing.

yeah they are pretty easy to pull apart. Ive owned 4 fx5s and one got bogged down by sand. take the mothor assembly off and clean it out

give it a good hit on the motor area, give that a shot. if not then take it a part. mine has done it a couple of times. ive had 2 for over 5 years.

Bugger. Whatever was wedged in the impellor freed itself after being disconnected and moved on to the carpet. Cue PANIC!!!! a foot high spring suddenly popped out the top but it's working now so umm yes.

Top Tip

Unplug your FX5 before disconnecting and moving it. (Partly to blame is the fact I've been awake 20 odd hours and a hard training session last night has left me tired :) )

This happened to my FX5 after 10 months of use. It completely stopped working. Then I took the motor off and gave the impeller and housing a full clean then it worked again. Sometimes your tanks substrate especially sand will jam your impeller.
