I have 2 405s that are less than 1 year old and have a combined gph of 680. Would I fx5 do a better job with a lower gph but all the pull going to one intake instead of 2?

I personally like the idea of two since you can use one on each side of the tank. Also doing media changes with 2 filters avoids the obvious problems that changing one filters media has. I know all the diehard fx5ers will tell you get the fx5, this is just my opinion. i have a 405 and xp4 on either side of my 125 and love it, although I wouldnt turn down an fx5!

i would also like to know which one is more effective...

i have the same problem. got 2 eheim 2026 and 1 fluval 405 in a 180g. wondering if one fx5 or one eheim 2080 would be more effective.

Well, are you having any problems with your water quality?

You have two good filters, don't get sucked into the appeal of an fx5 just because it's a big bad beast (I own one!).

If your water is clear, and your parameters are good, then why bother?

You could put the money in to a bigger tank, more fish, or just spend it on the cable bill you haven't paid in three months! :grinno:

My water is pristine, for some reason I started pondering and was wondering what others thought.

Trust me my money is spoken for already, on top of normal bill I just booked 15 hours worth of ink to get done this fall

Heh, I do that with lots of stuff, always have to have the biggest, best, fastest, etc. :grinno: Sounds like you've got your answer.

If you insist on buying an fx5, why don't you buy a bigger tank to go along with it? :naughty:
