I am running 2 Fx5's with tahitian moon sand I will have the tank set up in about a week does anyone have experience with this sand and these filters? Should I raise my intakes so they are 4-5" from the substrate as opposed to them being cut now and only about 1-2" from the substrate?

after having to clean sand out of 2 used FX5's that i've purchased.. i would say that sand and FX5's probably aren't an ideal combo. if you still think you want to run FX5's with sand i would definitely shorten the intake tube, give the sand a chance to settle before you start the FX5 also. and turn OFF the FX5 while you're doing tank maintenance to keep sand from getting in.

What type of Fish and size?

Anything that moves sand around (africans) I wouldn't suggest sand at all. I have 2 FX5's as well and the sandf was Always in the filter. And with the cost of part for the FX5 I would go with something along the lines fo Crushed Coral or Aragonite (non sugar grain size). I have some of the Cichlid sand in with my tropheus and Fronts and they constantly kick sand up into the intakes. The thing is that the sand is so light that it stay suspended longer in the water column once it's lifted. Gives the intake way more time to suck it up!

NOt and logical choice in my expereince.

exactly, i ran 2 fx5's on my 180 and the intakes were around 10'' from the bottom and still managed to get sand in them although not that much.

I am running a fx5 with eartheaters(they constantly move sand all day) and i really never had an issue with sand in the filter(intakes are half way up the tank though)i also runn 2 ac 110's on the same tank no issues. Just make sure your intakes are over half way and you should be ok for the most part. Unless you have a fish like my fenestratus that use to take mouth fulls of sand and spit them directly into the intakes and then chase the sand up the intakes(guess that was his idea of fun)he ruined a few filters for me,he currently has gravel in his tank(permanent time out:ROFL:)
