i guess im a little late on this but regardless, heres whats goin on. today i just placed an order for my fx5 which came with just the foam blocks in it. now to save the cost of shipping again, i bought along with it;

26.45 Oz 750 Gram pre filter media,
and 17.63 Oz of 500 gram Biomax. is this media with the foam pretty decent? plus im running a 2217 and cascade 700 so its not relied on as much. the tanks a 125 SA tank btw.
thanks for the advice!

prefilter is useless, get more biomax

After asking around on MFK, i'd have to agree. My FX5 has the bottom two trays packed with 4 boxes of fluval biomax. The top has some carbon (for the odor) and i just added some of this nitra-zorb thingy today in hopes of seeing results so i can water change a bit less often.

oops, haha oh well, i guess since i purchased it ill just try it and see what results arrive, but shouldve asked first! ..oh well ill see what it brings :nilly:

just mix the prefilter and biomax in the same tray. then get some scrubbies from the dollar store and put in one of the other trays.. if you want to use carbon or ammonia media, that leave another tray for you open to do that. If not, get more biomax when you can and fill the last tray with it.
Works well for me in all my fluvals. I found a FX5 for 215.00 (new, with three year warranty) so I figured Id go ahead and pick one up for myself and try it out....Checking first to see if thats a good price on one since Ive never really looked at a Fx5 before until a few days ago online.

I shove all of them with seachem's product. Pond Matrix for top and de*nitrater for middle and bottom.

Cheaper than biomax and claim to have more surface area. Best bang for my wallet :headbang2

bio max is better than scrubbies. Bio max redirects the flow path of the water through a bunch of channels for better nitrification, scrubbies do not do this, they are a waste ina canister
