i am considering the FX5 to upgrade the filtration on my 150 and was wondering how the baskets are configured. it looks like that are half circles that form a wall around a central area in the canister, but are there media baskets in that center area? i usually setup fluvals with the top tray as the bio media, the bottom one or two trays packed with filter floss, and the other one or two trays with carbon. this works really well for water clarity especially, could i get the equivalent to this on the FX5? how about maintenance when you actually have to get into the canister and clean it out, how much of a hassle is it? im very familiar with the other varieties of fluval but havent been able to actually see the inner workings of the FX5.

The FX5's are really easy to use. You can pretty much set up the center with anything you want. I have bioballs/media in one filter and only bio balls in the other and it works perfectly. I have a buddy who only uses bioballs in his and has no problem. To increase the water clarity I use the blue & white filter pads from fluval as needed. Overall it is a good filter with easy maintainence. Good luck

i use it on my 180 and its gr8 the output flow is alittle slow imo but overall a good filter and very easy to clean and use.

I'd recommend not using any filter media smaller than the Eheim Substrat Pro.

I used this media in one of my top baskets in my FX5. Later after cleaning the filter it started making rattling noises. I took everything out of the filter again and after taking off the motor housing that houses the propeller i found a few of the smaller balls had made their way down through the baskets and into the motor housing.
