would an fx5 be sufficient enough by itself(with 1800+gph from powerheads) to filter a 110ish gallon FOWLR with a porcupine puffer and MAYBE a grouper of some kind?

canister filters will start to pump out nitrates like crazy if you don't clean them at least once a week, but it will filter the water just fine. Just don't get behind on cleaning it

+2 but I do think that you will need more flow even with the powerheads. Is the 1800 gph split between 2 powerheads? Do you already have the powerheads or are you going to buy them still?

I personally would look at 2 Koralia 4's or 5's as the powerheads for this tank. That would get 2800 to 3300 gph total for the powerheads.

I would also look into getting a quality skimmer like Aqua C. Another main issue with canister filters is that they do not filter the surface at all. This is where the highest concentration of wastes are and a surface skimmer like an Aqua C Remora would do wonders to keep these big dirty fish healthy.

the remora may be a bit small for that tank even though they are good skimmers.

u could use the fx5 but i wouldnt run any bio-media. maybe just carbon and the medium blue filters pads. still u would have to clean the pad and change the carbon out at least every other week. more of a pita then it may be worth.

u could just use it flow and carbon only with no filter pad. then u may be able to stretch it to every 3 weeks. maybe even some bio-pellets(carbon like vodka dosing).

I have 2 fx5 on my 300 gallon tank and I have no problems just use the blue pads not the white polishing pads unless you want to change them once a week. Dont get me wrong the white pads work great they get clogged to fast

I do agree the remora may be a bit small, but if he is doing a canister he is not doing a sump and that means no way to really get a bigger skimmer. The Remora Pro is actually the one I recommend for this and the surface skimmer box will help greatly, though not ideal.

I think no matter the media really the canister needs to be cleaned weekly. Without filter pads the bag of carbon will even act as a pretty good filter and catch all those particles flowing through.

That means you are just leaving all the smaller stuff in your tank to rot then. The white pads are getting clogged very fast because there is a lot of it that needs removing. So I would recommend using the white pads to clean up the water.

No sump on a 300 gallon? FOWLR setup? What fish do you have?
