I have 2 FX5s running on a 180 gallon tank viewable from 3 sides. All of the plumbing has to hang off of one end (24"). I would like to add another FX5 but am becoming limited with space to hang more plumbing and was hoping to avoid more "mess". I would like to put the return of one filter into the inlet of another. That way I could have one in and out for 2 filters. Will this work? Has this already been done? Thanks for input/ideas.

It would work, but would be a waste.

This should work without a hitch, however you're going to lost the benefit of three inputs and i would fit the two linked FX5's with different media to contain different bactera/different properties (i.e. one with charcoal in 25% or something)

You'd also probably want to remove and fine particle sponge in the 2nd one as this would be relatively pointless.

Howdy,

Why do you need a third FX-5? What's the problem you are facing?

I am not sure if you're doing your pumps a favor. The first one will experience forces of suction, the second pump will pump with the flow. I think they were degined to pump still water, and I'd expect some additional wear.

Besides, you have the flow rate of one filter with the filter volume of two. If you run them independently, you have twice the flow rate.

I guess I'm just not sure what you're trying to achieve

best to keep filters opposite to each other, i.e. have one filter on one side of the tank and another on the very opposite side.. what ur saying sounds like everything is squished and would only reduce the effectiveness of the filters. if u need more then 2 FX 5 then i would get a sump system.

Run them in parallel off manifolds (zennzzo) or get a non-powered canister filter (like Ocean Clear)(not crazy about powering one of these with a fx5).

HarleyK does bring up a point... Are you trying to keep a half grown Wells cat in the 180g? :screwy::D

I also don't understand what your trying to achieve with 3 FX5 filters.
An example of this kind of overkill would be a 500g sump for a 180g tank.
Just buy a bigger tank and run 2 FX5's and remember turn over is not everthing, water quality can be achieved with a less is more approach.
