Is having a loop in the hosing bad?

When I setup my fx6 on my 72g I kept the hosing as long as I could, reason being so that I could use the same hosing when I get a bigger tank. Should I just quit being cheap and cut the hosing? Do you think the loops can reduce flow?

Also what is the best placement of intake/output for maximum flow?

You can cut the hoses as much as you want to, as far as going for a bigger tank, i would recommend hard plumbing for these types of canisters or go for a sump imo. I dont think the loops will reduce the flow at all, the fx6 have a decent motor in it, so you can still go with longer tubes.

Keep hosing short, no need to be cheap. I have a 405 (ok so smaller..) and it has a helluva time starting because I left the hose long and the loop dips below the top of the filter. I have to hold the hose up to get it to prime. That may not matter to an fx6 due to design differences though... I kept my fx6 hoses only as long as they needed to be, but not had to service it yet.

Even with excess hose or loops, I think you still have PLENTY of power behind your flow with that FX6. Don't worry about cutting it, just use it til you upgrade tanks.

The manual specifically tells you to not have any loops. Follow the manual. The FX5/6 are very temperamental regarding this and can cause micro bubbles. Hose is cheap.
