I've heard these guys are pretty mean and nasty, Anyone have any luck keeping tankmates with these guys? Or will everyone just be a temp resident? If someone has had a good exp with tankmates what have you kept with them and how large was the system?

I've kept with other eels of similar aggression, hasn't worked out with most other fish though. My current speciment is still small, but is very reclusive compared to its cellmate, a G. moringa, which is the only fish I've had that I actually fear geting bitten by.

Thanks for the reply

I've heard on another forum larger triggers might work, but certian kinds like a Niger that wont pick at the eel. I was really curious if a Trigger or Grouper would work...

I'd be a little leary of the G. moringa also those have some nasty looking teeth when grown

I'm not recommending G. moringa, I'm just sharing my experience with it. moringa can get bigger than the fimby, which might be a problem eventually, but they are together for grow-out more than anything else. I personally like mixing eels, it can be a crapshoot mixing an aggressive piscivore like a fimby with fish..peronally I don't mix triggers with eels due to possible nipping from the triggers, and in my tanks the eels are the centerpiece and would rather not put fish with them that could injure them (although I've had injuries from one eel to another, but they are few in number for the most part)

Fully agree on moringa, nastiest species I've ever owned, and a jumper on top of that. Not fit for aquarium life I think.

Anything too big to fit in it's mouth is a better bet, but I've seen these guys maul larger fish far bigger than them.

Any other species you're interested in?

Oh, and since you've gone to the admirable effort of using the scientific name, it's G. fimbriatus... just fyi :)

Thanks for the reply and the name correction LOL! Any other species you would suggest? I like the Jeweled Moray and Zebra Moray, Ive heard the Zebra is docile with tankmates but not sure on the Jewel

Jeweled moray is a great choice IMO - I also recommend G. miliaris (comes in quite a few color forms and prices), and there's nothing wrong with the Echidna genus. There are quite a few other great choices out there as well.

My fimbraited moray was pretty agressive towards anytning that stayed at the bottom of my tank, ripped up all my starfish and ate all the damsels (i assumed they could outrun him, but forgot he would get the at night with the lights out lol, my mistake). He did fine with my volitan and puffer though.
