I've had two of these for quite a while. One of them had part of his bottom jaw missing when I got him. I still bought him because I kind of felt sorry for the poor guy. Needless to say, he doesn't eat very well. Both eels are fairly long but the other one is much thicker and darker. The skinny one looks like he could die any day but he's been like that for a long time and acts perfectly normal otherwise. Anyone have any ideas on how to get him to eat more? I tried handfeeding but he is more interested in my fingers than the food. It's not like he doesn't try to eat...he just isn't very good at it.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I don't know....I tried handfeeding again tonight. This time he was oblivious to it. He could tell food was in the water and he swam very quickly all over the tank but never seemed to realize that I was holding the food. I hope I can figure something out pretty soon. He's obviously eating enough to stay alive for this long but the difference between the two eels is remarkable....like night and day. They should be about the same size. But the skinny one has such a better personality. I hope it works out.

Hmm...this guy is still alive but not doing any better. He's skinnier than ever and more lethargic now. Hand feeding isn't going well. I actually did get him to eat a few times but he still mostly just swims around my fingers. It's like he knows the food is there but has no sense of smell, sight or taste to find it...and then when he does he can't bite it. His personality has changed recently and he has some sort of spot that I can't explain. I don't know what to do at this point. I've even considered grabbing him and force feeding him (he does seem to want to eat) but that isn't a logical long term solution. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if he lives for another 6 months or dies tonight. And it's a real bummer because he's always had the best personality out of all of my eels. I feel like I know him so well that I'd take him to the bar and buy him a few beers if I could. I've done everything I can think to do but I'm afraid it's just a matter of time for him. :(

He's in a tank with some salt. Maybe add more? The other eels that have been in there have always been perfectly fine. I really don't want to lose this guy.

Do you know the specific gravity? I would try to have it at least 1.010. My old ones used to be in a salt tank and never had any issues.

I honestly don't know very much about salt. I just know that this guy can't eat because he doesn't have most of his bottom jaw. I wish salt was the answer and if it was I would study and become a salt professor in no time. It really breaks my heart to see him want to eat, not be able to do it and then just wither away and die. I'm to the point where the force feeding seems like the only option and...while not a great idea...at least it will buy some time. But then the question becomes...buy time for what? More feeding like that?
