G. winemilleri are a large-growing, tall-bodied species. They are true blackwater cichlids and as such are sensitive to poor water quality. When my city started messing with our water supply, the
G. winemilleri were the first ones to show it. You will need to keep the nitrates and DOCs low or you could see a problem. Mine refused to spawn despite going through the motions, and even when other wild geos were spawning, so I suspect like other blackwater fish they'll require very soft, acidic water. They're probably not quite as fussy as something like
Uaru fernandezyepezi, but still treat them like other blackwater species.
Over the years I've watched several vendors sell young wild-caught
G. winemilleri that actually turned out to be other things. For instance, the
G. brachybranchus I kept mine with were purchased as
winemilleri and ended up being something else. Know what you're looking for and buy them from a reputable source.
Mine were around 8 - 9" and were fairly peaceful, though they did push each other around and occasionally chase my other geos. The winemilleri are the golden colored fish with the bars and red fins in the pictures below. The others are the
G. brachybranchus.
