I've just witnessed my gachua's mating, which has surprised me to say the least as they're only about 3 & a half inches long and still possess faint immature 'eye spots' on their dorsal fins!
I noticed 2 of the 4 begin to flare and chomp at each other recently, but didn't notice any biting or chasing... and then today saw them mate twice in the space of about 30 minutes. Mating lasted about 20 seconds and ended with both fish shuddering before parting :naughty:. The other 2 fish aren't being harassed unless they stray too close to the pairs territory. So I have a few questions to ask you all as this is my first group of snakeheads.

1. Should I take the 2 single fish out as they're not being bothered?
2. What chance do such a young pair have of successfully raising young first time?

I know they're 'only gachuas', but I'm dead excited and just had to post! Any other tips or advice would be welcomed.

Cheers all..... Outlander.

Hi,congrats, how about some pics?I would nt leave the others in the same tank with them in this period, they surely will become more aggressive!

How similar humans and fish can sometimes be!

Congrats, that sounds super cool. I have no experience in breeding snakeheads as of now, so I would be lying if I tried to pretend I was giving good advice. Same time, I would take the other fish out as a precaution if you care about losing them instead of waiting for an experienced answer. They very well could be in danger as it is very common amoung snakeheads especially to become more aggressive after spawning.

I'll take the 2 singles out! The female of the pair is defending her territory but keeps coming to blows with one of the single fish, a big male and is getting knocked about some what. I saw them get into an almighty scrap this morning. They deserve a tank to themselves.

Thanks. And they have gigas. Came home to find the big single male pretty beat up. They have the tank to themselves now. I'll post some pics soon.

A quick update... The first attempt was a practice it seems. The male didn't even hold any eggs. A cold spell saw the temp drop to 18C, and that seemed to put them off trying again so I've given them a break and upped the temp to 21C which was the temp that started them off before... and they started again last Sunday. I noticed the male didn't come out when I fed, but noticed he was holding. Whether he still is or not I don't know, but let's hope so!
As for pics, I've knackered my pc and until it's sorted can't post any.

IF there is fry, what would you suggest I feed after they come off feeder eggs? I've got some artemia (dried brine shrimp eggs), but any other suggestions?

Hi,

try everything you want. If they swim free you can try artemia nauplies, and fine industrial food. When they get bigger try micro granule or flakes.
When about 2cm, they will try everything, and the water boiles.

Cheers and good luck
