The metal must be coated either with a liner, as mbj stated, or painting it with several coats of epoxy. Otherwise, zinc will leach into the water and become toxic to your fish.
how about the plastic tub ones? ive seen them outside of a local feed store. they are bright blue and appear to be plastic. would that cause a lot of moisture in my house?
I worked at an agricultural supply joint out of high school. I know Some of those stock tanks are treated with additives in the plastic to keep the water from fouling up or algae problems. Just check the labels, or go to the website / call the manufacturer.
I do know the black Rubbermaid ones are good to go.
You'll Obviously have more evaporation than a Closed lid tank. It should be manageable if you don't have alot of surface agitation or air stones.
I'd just make a lid. Something ghetto like an oddly shaped piece of acrylic laying on top. More so for heat retention than fighting evaporation. Heating tanks is a constant battle for me in my cold house

I made a lid for a 5ft diameter stock tank out of a glass patio table-top I bought at a garage sale for $25. Not a bad price considering I also got the 4 rocker chairs that went with the table.
