Hey my Gar has been acting weird lately. Three days ago while i was feeding my fish, i looked over and saw him on his back spazzing out! I was so scared and didn't know what to do, so i just grabbed my net and flipped him back over and waited. He corrected himself after a few minutes and resumed eating. I thought he choked on a big piece of shrimp, so i started cutting the shrimps in smaller pieces. Tonight when i fed him some shrimp, he went for it but missed and ended up on his back again, but this time he was calm. I flipped him over again and he was ok after a minute or so. Later on during the same feeding, he almost flipped over again going for another piece! But he released the shrimp instead and corrected himself. He has been more lazy than usual (not crashed, just lazy) and is eating a bit less. Not too much less, but noticeable.

What do you think all this could be? Please help me as i love my gar very much and i want to do everything i can to help him. Thanks a bunch.

does he crrash into anything while striking for food? also what are water params?

how much are u feeding at a time? did he eat then have this problem or while trying to eat have this problem?

I'd check water parameters.

Also, if the gar may have charged into anything, he might have gone into shock. Try cushioning the sides of the tank with plants.

I was thinking maybe i am overfeeding him :( I feed him until he refuses more food every night. Sometimes he gets quite fat. Is this healthy for him? To push his appetite like that? The problem happens when he tries to grab the food off the bottom of the tank.

that might be the issue. i know my shortnose gar sometimes eats too much and cant float propperly. he just kinda waddles if that makes any since

Yeah it does. Now he is crashed though.. Im going to wait it out and see if he recovers because sadly i dont have money for treatment all i have is salt. Hopefully he pulls through...

i don't quite get that statement, so does the gar hit into anything while trying to get food? does this only occur during meal times? meds don't work well with gar, the best treatment you can get him is clean water and removal of the stressor.

Please test your water. If the problem is water quality, it would be a shame to lose this fish over something so easily fixable.

How large is he? He may not need to to be filling up every day. I would skip feeding this tank for a couple of days and see if it helps.

Does he appear bloated at all?
