Have a 10 inch Tropical Gar, he seems to be using his lower jaw muscles in order to push water past his gills (this is all underwater I am not describing him going up for air). He opens his jaw and closes it continuously. He's been doing it for a couple days and he's still eating and active and he still has the ability to take breaths. Any ideas?

This seems to be spreading to other gars. I am thinking its an internal parasite because the gars which have it are not taking constant breaths at the surface of the water.

Any other suggestions?

can you check whether they have gill flukes? I am just guessing, here....

Gill parasites. Small guys.

Just google it i have no pix available

Raise the temp slowly to 86-88 and add salt according to the directions.

This will kill almost every aquarium disease.

Good luck!

Unfortunately Thailand doesn't sell a lot of heaters, I don't know where to get one even if that sounds weird. I'll try my fish market today.

Oh some good news, I turned on the light and the gars which had it stopped breathing oddly. I'm still gonna treat it the tank for gill parasites in case any are lying around! At night the temperatures probably get to 84-86 just because bangkok is so hot and that's why I don't use a heater.
