My florida is around 15"+ and I keep him with some bichirs.
13" ornate
9" ornate
8" short senegal

they get on great, I've never had them even pay attention to eachother. I also have a giant snakehead, a clown knife and a common pleco all of which ignore the gar also.
I have been told to watch out for plecs sucking on gars and bichirs but mine is absolutely fine.

ONE PROBLEM though, a 3" bichir would easily be a snack for a 12" gar. their instinct is to eat anything that will fit down their throat and a bichir definately would at that size, I bought all my bichirs at 2" last may and grew them out in a 20 long. I would wait until the bichir is around 5" and pretty beefy and the gar should completely leave him alone.

You'd be surprised what a gar can eat too, mine easily gulped down a 4" tinfoil that had a large body.

I would say No! I dont care who has a pic of 2 together its only a matter of time before the birchir gets shredded. I lost a 8 yr old senegal to a florida gar and my gators even at small sizes shredded many types of fish :). Gar have teeth and birchirs look like a piece of spagetti. End of story.

Gar housed with birchirs results in eminent doom for the birchirs. I dont care how "nice" or well tempered your gars are they are killers and they will kill its their nature... pictures lie, anyone can house 2 non compatible fish together for a day and get a pic. I have years of experience with all types of gar and they do not play well with other species, especially slender ones. Whoevers pic that is will come home one day to a bloodied birchir or the florida swimming around with it in its mouth like a chew toy :) make sure to post that pic so i can say...i informed you thusly. Just cuz everyone appears to do it doesnt mean its true or right.

Your one bad experience will be taken into consideration but the amount of succesful keepings surely would point in the direction that it is okay.

some people get killed by dogs, does that mean they should never be kept as pets?

Bichirs and gars are not incompatible, both are ancient nocturnal hunters that prey on small food items and have Ganoid scale structure. they are essentially very compatible with the right husbandry. keep both well fed and there is not ANY issues. Bichirs are hiders and gars are swimmers and lurkers.
