Gar and living in soft, acidic water/blackwater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any hardness or pH should be fine. Gar are often found in blackwater habitats (such as baldcypress and tupelo swamps, and pinewoods streams) in the US.

SA doesn't necessarily always have to be cichlids. There's also characins, aros, lungfish, rays, catfish, knives, and many other things to consider.

Also, I've found that some have pulled it off, provided that we're dealing not with Oscars, but PBass or something akin.

Thanks for the info regarding ph. Perhaps, can you state which species live in such environs?

I have seen spotted, shortnose, and longnose gar in acidic swamps and streams here in Tennessee (as well as hard, alkaline limestone streams), and I know that alligator and Florida gar also occur in such habitats in their ranges. I have no experience with tropical or Cuban gar but I would guess they are probably also tolerant of blackwater conditions.

Temperate fishes in general accept wide variations in hardness, pH, TDS, and temperature. Our water parameters tend to fluctuate a lot compared to the more stable waters of wet tropical areas.

im sure most gar species can tolerate lower PH.
except cubans i think?
ive kept florida gar in water with lower PH without problems.
also,yes people have done it.
but even cichla with gar is a bad combo.
