So I've been reading up and seeing that it is not a good idea to put gars and plecos together. I've been raising two florida gars and a green phantom pleco in my 60 gallon growout tank and they have actually all been fine with no signs of aggression towards each other. Is this something I may have to worry about sometime down the road or did I just get fortunate and have a pleco that doesn't like to bother gars.

they arent aggressive towardss gars they just end up sucking the scales off gars because they can latch on at night or whenever thats why people dont put them in a tank together you end up with gars having missing scales and exposed wounds

i hope this helps

you will have to worry about it down the road, so may as well plan for it now. that and it can happen at any time, so "down the road" could mean tomorrow or a year from now. best not to take the risk.

you say they have been fine, but how long of a time frame are you talking about? best bet is to separate them sooner than later. good luck--

It not a good idea to mix ganoid scaled fish with plecos (Gars and bichirs). Althought some plecos can be mix, but most of them like to suck on the slime. Stay away from the common pleco or sail fin pleco type as they like to navigate the gars or bichir and attach itself. You might be able to get away with vampire or cactus type plecos.

I've had them for a little over a month now, I think I'm going to play it safe and get rid of the pleco.

This is 100% true. I can't count the number of threads per year that people lose fish to this issue...

they suck the slime off the gars, not the scales...there is likely no pleco in existence that can remove the scales from a gar--
