I think my 6" alligator gar ate my 4" short nose gar. Is this common? I thought all gars are buddies?

very common for gars to eat other gars, especially at their smaller sizes. as they get larger (say over 12") it's a little less likely, but when they are at this small juvenile stage they will even eat their own species in the wild and have been commonly observed to be cannibalistic. when dealing with smaller gars, it's good to make sure that they are as close in size to each other as possible, especially when one of them is a gator gar.

sorry to hear about your loss, and i hope you're able to pick up another gar in the future!--

:iagree:
This happened to my buddy before, his larger florida gar ate his smaller gar. It happens, sorry for your loss

My 6" and 7" gator gars have become a terror in that tank. They messed up my Jardini and starting to mess up my two payara. I moved them in with my bigger fish, three Florida gars all around 15" and a clown knife thats about 24". You guys see any trouble in this? My clown is pretty peaceful.

If it looked at it as food, he'll eat it
