Hello, looking for some advice here. About 4minutes ago, my Longnose Gar ate something that must have fallen into the tank by accident, and now it has it caught in his..mouth/throat? I don't have a clue what it was, but it sounded like a metal *clan*, and sure enough, he was trying to swallow something when I turned around to see what the noise was. I was wondering what I should do to cause the least amount of stress to get it out? Any thoughts on what I should do in general? He seems stable now, just had a lump in his mouth.
I wont be able to see a reply till morning; been very sick lately, and I need to head off for the night seems how I cant really stand anymore, but I'm hoping to see some advice in the morning from anyone with an idea!
Thank you for any help ahead of time

a Photo would be helpful BTW gars are pretty resilient, my first gar was WC on hook. It was lodged in his throat and with the help for my wife holding him and a small pen i was able to hold his mouth open and remove the hook. He is still alive today, that was about two years ago. :-)

I was going to snap a picture, but I awoke to some bad news; he was on the floor. Somehow he managed to jump through the little slit on the left side of the tank, but he was still alive. I setup a tub before I left for school, added a smaller filter, but I don't think he'll last. I didn't see the bulge in his throat anymore when I picked him up, so maybe he managed to get it out; however, he couldnt swim properly when I added him into the tub. Fingers crossed that he is still alright when I get home, but I thinl the chances are slim at this point...

Well...I might have posted this with no need for help in the end. The piece is no longer there, from what I can see, and he seems....stable  I'll be honest, I didn't expect him to still be alive at this point at all...I will be looking around the tank/inside the tank to see if I can find what might have been the issue

Glad to hear things have taken a turn for the better. Quite a series of unfortunate events if you ask me!
That's what throws me off I suppose 0.o
your lucky this time.. remeber to always keep your tank covered! G clamp the cover!
Definitely will do now.
Still seems alright, I will be adding him back to the tank soon; only thing I found was a piece of a hotdog with gar teeth marks on it, which I occasionally feed to the large catfish and Pacu. Might have been the problem, but that's all I have for now I suppose...one crazy event with a happy ending..I think

glad gar seems ok. i would skip feeding HOT DOG to anything in your tank...pollutes water, is highly fattening and unhealthy, and can easily cause problems with your gars. good luck--

thats crazy.. glad everything seems ok. agree with sol.. but as a mother ive also looked into just how bad hot dogs are for humans.. let alone our pets.
