I've had this Gar for a week now, my first. It's a baby, about 3" long...spotted or shortnose, time will tell. Anyways, he does not swim around much, stays in a corner of the tank most of the time, always on the surface.

Always on the surface, almost never goes deep. And he takes this weird pose where his butt kinda floats on the surface, and his head a little lower below the water ( _/ ). I have the impression his butt floats too much and he can't keep it low in the water. He seem to be struggling to stay deeper in the water.

Is this normal for a Gar? Could it be that I have too much current in the tank? I have an Aro in there, just a tad bigger, and he don't mind the water currents... The Gar ate once since I got him, I fed him a Danio.

Any feedback would be appreciated...thanks!

sound normal from baby gars ive cared for.

I just picked up a 12in florida gar. He was all swimming around in the tank and stuff at the store.

Now I have him in my tank he is doing the same thing you mentiond. I think they just do it when in a new tank. Yours and mine should come around in a week or so. As long as he is eating I wouldn't worry.

Ah great, thanks guys. I saw mine eat a Danio the second day I had him, so on that side I don't think there's a problem. I'm thinking on getting a couple of his "bros and sis" from the shop where I got him. I guess it would be more pleasant for them... I could put them in a 30g growout for the time being.

Thanks for feedback!
