Gar & Bowfin Subforum Merge - Discussion

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Next Aim(for me):Learn Abt North America Second most true ancient fish(i think):)

one guy posted that the second most true ancient fish was a bowfin:confused:

Ah, that'd be one of the sturgeons then. I thought that you had posted the second largest North American fish before which would be the alligator gar.

Li has to access the backend of the forum. i'm not familiar with that part

Interesting. I wonder if that's difficult to do or not with the current forum software since it's supposed to be the most powerful forum software.

Hagfish actually and really this taxonomic argument IMHO does not mean much.. Gars and Bowfin are the surviving members of this once widespread grouping of fishes.... they naturally go together with or without reason for many different reasons..

If you have charicins regularly a part of Knifefishes and still to this day some how many years later people still think a Needlefish is a Gar just because of the name.. Why bother with a detailed explanation about why? It needs no why as no one cares anyhow.. they just want a quick and easy way to get other people to tell them things they are confused about, do not have the education or experience to know about or are just too dang ADHD ridden or lazy to do real personal research.. That is what forums are for.. Take it or leave it as it is your choice. It is what it is so why fight it. IMHO Bowfin would be best dealt with here as in this particular forum we do have a select number of people that keep both (and in some cases do real research involving both) and we do not particularly go elsewhere for a variety of reasons.. This action would be IMO a great bonus to MFK as it will raise the bar again here to provide for exceptional detail to a given subject matter.. Everything about it is a Win-Win for MFK and in the end a Win-Win for Bowfin...

What is so difficult about typing And BOWFIN in a space currently occupied by just GARS, then you I and maybe a couple others just post up a few things to be made into stickies (that no one will read but we do it anyhow) and then some mods in other areas need to make about three clicks of mouse buttons to put things here if they come up.. The rest continues just as it has with absolutely zero real impact to anything.. Only change would be Bowfin would now be directed into the forum that would best suit it.. In time the other mods whom get Bowfin stuff now will not even have to worry themselves cause it will be clear and obvious where to go.. One can also, through the software, easily search and then Bulk dump all the older posts in about five or six mouse clicks..

In red above..

For the hagfish thing, I was thinking from a freshwater standpoint; I should have pointed that out.

Very good points about the whole merger deal; hopefully it will happen soon after the server gets moved this weekend.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

doesn't matter if you were thinking freshwater or marine...the argument you were making in terms of reviewing NAmerican ancient fishes from an evolutionary standpoint is much more complex than that. like Richard said, no review (accurate or otherwise) is necessarily needed for arguing the case of this particular merger as it's essentially sister groups of fishes, not much to do with which one is older, etc etc.

one could add or drop hagfishes and lampreys based on jaws and bony skeletons as well...so you see that could go on and on.--

So as interesting as the hagfish is (insert mother-in-law joke), any update on the Gars --> Gars and Bowfin?

thus far no one is against the move. but we will be upgrading the server soon so will probably happen after that.
