Guys

Need urgent help.
My Gar fish is lying on the bottom of the tank and breathing heavily. It's been like that for about 12 hours.

It also lies in a strange sideways position at times.
It's breathing heavily, or so I think (Seeing it's underside clearly for the first time).

No food attracts it to the top.

I just changed the water significantly.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?

He may be worsening. Now he's taking in huge gulps.
He seems to slither towards the oxygen balls... or that may just be my perception.

how big is he? seem like a spinal injury.

With the way you are describing the symptoms, i wonder if if its to do with low levels of dissolved oxygen in the tank?

What are the temps like in the tank? Maybe the tank temp is too high creating the lower levels of oxygen in the tank...

I think he may be dead. No movement at all. I feel extremely helpless.

Oxygen bubbling through the tank as always... I haven't changed any setup, which worked fine for 9 months.

If the fish is dead...there's just one thing to do. Scoop him out...and dispose of him as you feel best. Sorry for the loss.

What are your parameters like? Post them up, don't say 'perfect' or 'good' like some other people. I don't know what filtration system you are running but it could be ammonia poisoning, and it does sound like it if he is gulping or breathing rapidly. Air stones or bubblers don't do much for aeration as it's breaking of the surface tension that aids/causes oxygenation. Pointing a powerhead at the surface is much more effective.

After looking at the pics it looks like it has gill curl which is caused by excessive ammonia levels. What did you treat the new water with when you did the last wc?

Even if the fish has already passed we can still help you going foward. If you could post water parameters ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, Ph & temp. Also what is your maintenance schedual water changes, filter maintenance etc. I also noticed the green water which would also signal somthings off. How long have you had the fish what size is it and the tank it's in? If we can help you straighten something out you can have a better experiance in the future. Any and all info would be helpful.
