Sometime next month I will be fishing and was thinking of collecting wild Gars while I am at it. Never done this before so I would like some pointers on what is needed to collect the fish in a safe manor and best used practices to ensure success.
Thanks in advance.

ya gotta make sure its actually in there mouth and use some live fish but i'm not sure if its that legal to catch gars in ohio? you only have long nose and spotted right?

I use a weightless fluke or lizard on some spiderwire, I don't even set the hook, just let them take it for a few and then slowly and easily give them some resistance. They will chomp it a few more times and then roll with it - can be tricky to remove the braid but does not damage the fish at all. I've never taken any, I just catch and release so no advice on transport methods.

Was looking for a method that did not include bait and hook, sorry, should have stated that from the beginning. Wanted to catch Gar under 8", so I would need info as where I should look for Gar that size (landscape they would be most likey be hanging out at, Sandusky lake here in Ohio) and best method to catch a Gar 8" or smaller.

dip net or seine for YOY gars that size...it can be hit or miss unless you know gars are in the area. go for highly vegetated areas that are relatively undisturbed. you're mainly after longnose in OH as there have not been spotted gars found out there for ages (increased turbidity due to sedimentation has essentially extirpated them from the state).--

That is correct, I hope to catch a few black longnose Gar for the collection, and what ever else I can pull out of the water.

Gars this time of year near me , at least the baby ones, are along rocky banks and rip rap that borders calm bays. Try looking for small bait fish uner 3 inches, find rhose and start looking for floating sticks as my wife calls them. I used a net to get mine he is under 3 inches. Goodluck

Man, threads like these make me wish I could catch wild gar in my area.
