is it when gar loose that thing on the top of their caudal fin that their pectoral fins grow??, cuz i noticed that their pectoral fins are much smaller than the others when they are young, and that in adult pics, the adults pectoral fins are the same fins as the anal fins

please tell me u understand the question........

btw, both my gar are just fine, and ive noticed the one that i caught at about and inch is now about 2 1/2, its harder to tell with one i caught at 3 1/2 inches

okay i have no idea what you're talking about...again. was going to elaborate on which part i dont understand, but then i realised i didnt understand the entire post.

their pectoral fins start growing before their tail extension grows into the tail. that is the only part i understood.

Not that I truly care to bother with this thread as it is bound to be a waste of time....

The pectoral fins are the last fins to develop on gars. They usually increase in size substantially when the fish reaches around 5 to 6 inches. The development has nothing to do with the Tail extension and filament (properly termed a Urostyle). Early Development and absorption of the urostyle into the Caudal is often individual to varied degrees. It is not diagnostic or attached to any degree with normal morphology and Juvenile development. Fish with well developed Paired fins will often still retain the urostyle. Likewise some with undeveloped paired fins will already have the urostyle absorbed into the Caudal.

This is way under what they should be at... A series of Oculatus I have that I obtained about the same time as yours (Mid-Late June) and the same general size at capture are now 5 to 7 inches long... This size is what should be expected of a Lepisoteus sp. after a little under 2 months after hatch..
