Hello guys,

Are these fish from Lepisosteus or Atractosteus?

These were sold as Shortnose Gar (Lepisosteus platostomus). I am pretty sure that's not correct. Are these Gator Gars (atractosteus spatula)?

The gars are about 4 inches in size, so it might be a bit difficult to identify the exact species. But, if some of you experts can identify just the genus (if this is a Atractosteus or a Lepisosteus
), that will be great too.

Regards,

Sid

Thank you, Tankbuster.

Waiting (with bated breath) on experts to confirm..

(Sold to me as "Shortnose". Doesn't look like a Shortnose either.. )

Cheers,
Sid

to you mind sharing what characteristics you've seen in the fish (pic) that's led you to feel this way?

Not a gar expert myself, but definitely not a gator.

Totally right it is a Squirrel and not a fish at all.....

To the original poster though... Yeah that is a pretty stereotypical Atractosteus spatula without much doubt about it.
