Gar ID

Just purchased this guy from my LFS, you guys have an idea of what it is? Thanks in advance

was it labeled black line gar?

No it was labeled Marble Gar, and from looking around that is supposedly a Striped Pike Characin but I seen pictures of that fish and I don't think this one looks like that.

It is about 2 to 2.5 inches?

Yea about 3 inches

Lepisosteus oculatus or Platyrhincus. Interesting one really as this one does not look like the typical Hobby variety but is more like that one would see in wild fish.

Keep this thread updated, it will be interesting to see it as it grows a bit more.

i agree that the fish looks a little different, but would still lean toward Florida gar since it came from an LFS and we are still in early season for those fishes, and probably a bit too early for wild spots (wherever they may be collecting them). that and since they are in Cali, i would imagine they are coming in from "farm" collections.

just say a tiny FL gar at the LFS (fish drs) today...same size, pattern somewhat variable.--

I've seen Gars like that before in lfs and it seems they always grow to be a Spotted/Florida.
