Bought this Gar in March at just under 4''. Now 7'' but any idea on species? Bar/line on top of back has now broken into large spots.
It eats really well on frozen fish-never had to use feederes (but then these isn't popular here in UK)
P.S. Sorry for naff photos - best I could manage

Hey Rob,

looks like either a florida or spotted to me.

Cheers

dayum that is neat he is really black. never seen one so dark before. looks like a FL

I knew either a Florida or Spotted-just din't know which. The LFS called him a 'Crocodile Gar' but I took that with a pinch of salt. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out

actually i did think crocodile gar when i saw the pics, but i'm no gar expert. adult gars are easy enough to tell, well except for florida and spotted, but when it comes to juvies, most of the time i have no idea.

anyway crocodile gar can be used to refer to hybrid. of course im not saying thats what yours is because i don't know. anyway check out the following hybrid between gator and either florida or spotted

http://www.primitivefish.com/Crocodile%20Gar%20Type%20II.htm

EDIT: on 2nd look, i guess its probably more likely that its florida or spotted rather than a gator hybrid looking at the snout.
