What is the differance between a Crocodile gar, and a spotted gar? Is the former just another name for the latter? Is "Crocodile gar" another name for both the Florida gar, and the spotted gar? Thanks for your help.

crocodile gar is a name they use for alligator gar hybrid, usually crossed with spotted gar or florida gar, and sometimes with shortnose gar.

however if you see this name at a lfs, honestly its hard to say just based on the name whether its really an alligator hybrid or just any gar with a cool-sounding made-up name. for example, at my lfs just about every gar is called 'gator' gar.

ricky is right about the hybrid gars as well as the uncertain designation at most LFS when it comes to any gar. it's best to take a picture and/or check reference images for comparison (there are several on this site, other sites, as well as primitivefish.com, where i have all the species photographed and ID'd).

the gars which were originally available as crocodile gars (and the most commonly encountered hybrid for a while...although now they are pretty hard to come by) are alligator x shortnose gar hybrids. hybrids of the other gar species are much less frequently encountered.--
