so I know this sounds really dumb but bare with me. ive been doing a little research and I found that the longnose gar can be found in new york's lake Champlain. now this is much further north than NJ and they get much colder temps. have any of you ever tried to keep them outdoors in NJ or in a state with a similar climate?

you would need a big and deep pond, 4-5 feet deep or more !

You would definitely have to heat the pond.

for issues of space I dont think im going to try. I wonder if there are any key differences between the longnose you can find in upstate NY and the ones you can find in warmer regions. if any of you have the resources and the time if would be awesome if you cold catch and compare one from Fl and one from lake Champlain.

there is a range map if you want it

Longnose Gar live in Minnesota, so I would think they could live in an unheated pond in NJ as long as it was deep enough to avoid freezing too completely.

now another question do you think the minesota gar would be a sub species of the long nose. do you think a regular long nose would be able to survive the i might just get sun fish or a chain pickerel but I was curious about this.
