Hey guys, I'm building an approximately 2,000g pond in my backyard. It is going to be 6 feet wide, 13 feet long, and 3-4 feet deep. I'm planning on doing a bog filter as well as a diy tub filter (for mech and more bio filtration).

My question is, I live in Louisville, Ky. We do get pretty cold winters here, capable of freezing shallow water. A 3-4 foot deep pond won't freeze, especially since I plan on keeping it from freezing with a floating heater or something.

I am planning on putting my shortnose gars in this pond when its done. Will they likely survive the winter? They are native to this area, so I would think they shouldn't have any problem, but the waterways they inhabit are probably deeper than 4'.

I'm just curious what everyone thinks? This pond will also be home to my eastern spiny softshell turtle, and some bluegill/sunfish. Plus any other natives I happen to catch.

shouldnt be an issue. just make sure it doesnt freeze. oh and much better choise than sellen them

Yah, I was thinking it'd be easier with fewer. But then I look at them, and I can't decide which one's I could bear to part with! Besides, my girlfriend has a bad habit of naming my fish, and once she names them I can't get rid of them ;).

nice. when i move into my new house im gonna build a small pond outside for summer use for my gar.
