Not sure exactly what happened but the pectoral fins on my gar got injured som how. my ? is will they heal and how long does the process normally take to make full recovery?

What kind of injury are we talking about? Did it get bit? Is it bent? Is it frayed?

it all depends on how badly they are injured. Some medicines like Melafix or even Stress Coat are good for fin repair. The fins should be able to heal to some degree, if not all the way. The length of time for recovery will depend on what meds you use, if any at all, as well as your water quality. Lots of O2 is always good!

meds(including melafix & others) are bad for gar and should not be used. gars get their fins shreded pretty frequently, so you shouldn't need to worry. it'll be back to normal in days. also, if you still feel uncomfortable, post a pic. that would guarantee that nothing more serious had happened. just beware of bad tankmates(assuming they're what caused this), today it might be a mere matter of shreded fins, tommorow it might be a fatality. good luck:cool:

Just curious, why is this the case? I've heard of some meds being bad for scaleless fish, but never for something like gar.
