ok so i got my 500g up and running, its eurobraced acrylic so it has 2 prob 2.5x2.5 foot holes in the top. i dont have a cover over them or canopy or anything and its bowed in so the water touches the center brace. how likely are typical florida gars to jump? what should i cover it with so i can still get good light and not need to move much to feed(top of tank is like over 5.5 feet tall) im looking to hear some input and advice if anyone has DIY covers.

THANKS

They are jumpers for sure. I would look into eggcrate, also called light difusing grid. Should allow lots of light through and doesn't have to be moved to feed.

i have some, but it cuts back the light quite a bit, will i need to throw a brick on it or something?

In the past when I used it for a lid I did not weigh it down. I was a fairly heavy piece to begin with though. Also the biggest fish was only about 14" at that time and I didn't feel the momentum would be able to knock off a 4x2 piece of eggcrate.

tbh I'de have the most concern of the size of the gar going into the tank. small gar are notoriouse for breaking their backs in to large of tanks. there is alot of information in the Gar forums you would likely find useful.

errr uh oh just picked up like a 9 incher today and have him in 40b to treat for parasites and was planning on putting into the 500g this week
