Just wanted to make an official place(sticky?) for all MFKers to post views and opinions on how these prehistoric beasts act in captivity. Also, their personalities, care, and possible tankmates. Come on everyone, this would really help out all of these awesome, questionable fish get to the suitable place they deserve.

Please post somewhat in this format with the personality, care, and possible tankmates following the gar's name. *Only post the information you know, so you don't have to go asking other's for the complete list or end up getting something wrong.**The genus names are just for you to know.***Basically just post what you feel should be nesecary for a customer of the gars to figure out what they should pick or to inform someone on this different, yet wanted fish.

Shortnose(Lepisosteus platostomus)=

Longnose(Lepisosteus osseus)=

Spotted(Lepisosteus oculatus)=

Florida(lepisosteus platyrhincus)=

Crocodile(Lepisosteus platostomus x Atractosteus spatula)or(Lepisosteus platyrhincus or oculatus x Atractosteus spatula)or even(Lepisosteus osseus x Atractosteus spatula)=

I have Florida Gars. Therefore, the following information applies to Floridas, but most likely, to other gars, as well. The best tankmates for gars are other gars. Fish who are too boisterous at feeding time may injure gars (such as oscars, pacu, and other large, predatory fishes). The thing to remember is that gars are quite delicate in their feeding activity. They cannot compete with bigger fishes for food. They are calculating, thoughtful fishes. They are known to rest at the bottom of the tank for periods of time. Tankmates should be carefully selected. Any fish that can fit into the gars' mouths will be eaten. Take care in choosing tankmates because the gars' mouths can seem to 'un-hinge,' allowing larger fish than one would believe in the mouth. Plecos are bad tankmates for gars, as they tend to suck on the gars' bodies, eating the slime coat. Gars are hardy fishes when kept properly; if sickened, they are difficult to treat. Some have said they have difficulty when keeping "shiny" fishes with gars; however, I keep a large shoal of silver dollars with mine, and have no trouble. Gars are jumpers, and no space they can possibly fit through should be left on the top of the aquarium. Many gars can be easily trained to eat prepared foods; for some, there is no "training" necessary. I hope this information is helpful; I have learned it over one and half years of keeping my gars.

you need to be doing more research if you have false gars up there, and 3 croc gars clumped into one catagory. there's little point to the thread as everything is found in more specific threads on this board. furthermore opinions on care etc will vary greatly from person to person, you're gna get way different responses for somthing like this
